ARISAIG traditional music and songs from Scotland, Ireland and New France

Arisaig’s music is a trip trhough Gaelic folklore and the history of Quebec and the Maritimes. Arisaig offers music for all sorts of occasions and festivals.

Kennet MacKenzie – bagpipe, flageolet
Kennet Mackenzie is from the Maritimes. He learned to play the great Scottish bagpipe at Halifax, where he played in a number of pipe bands. Presently he lives at Montreal. Since 1967 he is a pipe-major in the pipe bands Pierrefonds Pipes and Drums and Rawdon Pipes and Drums. He was a member of the folkloric group Brahan Seer with Richard Chapman, Kirk MacGeachy, and Gilles Losier from 1981 to 1986, and he has played in duo with Gilles on numerous occasions, notably at the Champlain Valley festival in Vermont, Mémoires et Racines at Joliette, and Mariposa Folk Festival at Barrie, Ontario. He has played with Kate and Ana MacGarrigle, and his bagpipe can be heard on the compact disks of Kate and Anna as well as that of Jean Carignan. Now he plays his Great and small bagpipes (Scottish small pipes) and his flageolet with Laurence Beaudry and Susan Palmer.

Laurence Beaudry – violin, alto, voice
Laurence has played in numerous string groups and ensembles. She has notably played and sung in the both the orchestra and the choir of la Pleïade as well as in Olde World Order, a medieval group. For the last fifteen years she has devoted her time primarily to traditional Quebec, Scottish and Irish music. She presently teaches violin at des Arts de la Veillée. She has done several tours in Europe with the dance troupes les Éclusiers de Lachine and les Pieds Légers as well as several representations with les Sortilèges.

Susan Palmer – harp, keyboard
Susan Palmer plays the Irish harp and has a particular interest in ancient music. She was a founding member of Sanz Cuer, a medieval music ensemble. She has played with numerous ensembles, amongst them Variditas, Gerinaldo, le Voir Dit and the SMAM (Studio de Musique Ancienne de Montreal). She has played in Maeve, the female Celtic Music group from Montreal, and with the singer Beverly McGuire. She has participated in the ‘‘Fête de la Nouvelle-France’’, the Celtic Festival of Montreal, the Ville-Marie Feis, the ‘‘Irlande sur le St-Laurent’’ show, the Trois-Rivières festival and other events. She has also taught at the CAMMAC music camp and the SIAMSA school. Her solo album ‘‘Ulchabhan’’ is available at Archambault.
